"Now it is time for the flourishing of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. That is why I wish for Sravasti Abbey to continue to increase, so a proper monastic Sangha will exist in the West."
- Panchen Otrul Rinpoche

What We Planned

A Step Towards Peace: Building a Home for the Sangha to Sustain the Dharma is a four-phase building/renovation project to expand Sravasti Abbey's immediate residential accommodations and to lay the groundwork for future growth

What We've Done

In 2008 we

  • Completed the kitchen-dining remodel to accommodate 30 or more people.
  • Began construction on Gotami House, completing most of the exterior of the building.
  • Installed a complete new water system that can serve the Abbey's growth for many, many years.
  • Installed a septic system for Gotami House.
  • Installed a geo-thermal heating system for Gotami House.
  • Dug and poured the foundation for the retreat cabin.

Total funds raised as of 5/15/09:    $706,372

Total funds spent as of 5/6/09:      $629,748

What We Still Need to Do

In 2009 we will

  • Complete the detailed interior work for Gotami House—
doors, floors, plumbing, lighting, fixtures, cabinetry,
    and so forth.
  • Install two septic fields.
  • Construct the retreat cabin.

Gotami House is the first building in a detailed Master Plan. Eventually, Sravasti Abbey will grow to include a temple and library, a large guesthouse with kitchen/dining facilities, as many as four monastic residences, and more retreat cabins. We expect the current project to provide sufficient facilities for about five years.
